What to Wear

What to Wear Tips
I don’t know about you guys, but choosing an outfit for myself is a daunting enough task by itself, so picking out what my family is going to wear for family photo day?? In a word – overwhelming! This is the number one question I get before family sessions, so I put together a few tips.

Tip #1: First things first – do not all wear the same thing! It’s important to coordinate your clothing but not all match. Choose colors with the same tones and that complement each other, but don’t have everyone wearing the same exact color!

Tip #2: Stay away from super loud patterns, huge logos/words and characters on children’s clothing. Simple patterns and colors are great – even bright colors, but the focus of the photos should always be on the people, not the clothing!

Tip #3: Pick the kids’ clothes first, then choose coordinating clothing for the parents to wear. Let’s face it – it’s just way more fun picking out clothes for our kids than it is for ourselves! Plus, there’s a good chance that your kids will actually NEED new clothes for the session, where as you might have something in your closet already.

Tip #4: Accessorize! Scarves, belts, ties, jewelry, hats, and fun shoes can help pull the whole look together. It’s also a great way to add in pops of color without going overboard!

Tip #5: Be consistent! This is important in two ways – first, you should all be consistent in your style of clothing. Make sure you all have generally the same level of “fanciness” or “casual-ness” (that makes sense, right?). And lastly, be consistent with who you are as a family. These photos will stay with you for a lifetime, and you want to be able to always look back and remember exactly who you were in that period of time, not wonder what you were thinking with those clothes! Definitely put thought and effort into finding the right outfits, and by all means, have fun, but don’t stray too far from your usual style.

You are going to look amazing! I can’t wait to see how you look on your big photo day!
